MACON, Ga. — What began as an ordinary Sunday in Macon quickly turned tragic after two separate deadly incidents shook the community — one involving a high-speed chase that ended in a crash into a church, and another in which a fight between two homeless individuals near a gas station turned fatal.
High-Speed Chase Ends in Fatal Crash on Napier Avenue
The first incident unfolded Sunday afternoon when authorities engaged in a high-speed chase through west Macon. According to witnesses, the pursuit came to a violent end when the fleeing driver lost control of their vehicle and crashed into a church building along Napier Avenue.
Photos of the wreckage, provided by local resident Larryo Falconsville, show the vehicle severely damaged and partially lodged against the church structure. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the driver was killed in the crash.
Details about what prompted the chase or the identity of the driver have not yet been released. Investigators remained at the scene for hours, inspecting the vehicle and surveying the damage to the church property. Fortunately, no one inside the church was injured.
One bystander described the crash as “like something out of a movie,” adding, “You could hear the sirens, then the screeching tires, and then the impact. It shook the ground.”
Deadly Shooting on Harrison Road
As authorities were still responding to the crash, another tragedy was reported in the city. Coroner Leon Jones confirmed that a deadly shooting occurred Sunday morning on Harrison Road near the Murphy USA gas station.
According to Jones, two homeless individuals got into an altercation that escalated into gunfire. One man pulled a weapon and fatally shot the other during the dispute. The victim was later pronounced dead, though their identity has not been released pending notification of family.
Deputies with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office quickly responded and detained the suspect. The shooter is currently in custody as investigators work to determine the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
A City on Edge
The two back-to-back incidents left residents rattled, adding to concerns about rising violence in Macon. “It feels like every week we’re hearing about another tragedy,” said one neighbor who lives near Harrison Road. “This city doesn’t feel safe anymore.”
Local officials and community leaders echoed frustrations, noting that Sunday’s events reflect ongoing challenges — from reckless driving incidents to disputes among vulnerable populations turning deadly.
Investigations Ongoing
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and the coroner’s office continue to investigate both cases. Authorities say additional details, including the identities of the deceased individuals, will be released once families have been notified.
Community members are being urged to report any information they may have about the Harrison Road shooting to Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 1-877-68-CRIME.
As Macon residents process the day’s events, many are left shaken by what was anything but a peaceful Sunday in their city.
