PRIEST RIVER, Idaho — The firefighting community across the West is mourning the loss of J. Hank Hester, a 70-year-old firefighter from Priest River, Idaho, who passed away Monday while actively working to protect lives and property during the Dragon Bravo Fire operations.
Officials confirmed that Hester, a seasoned and dedicated professional, was engaged in hazard tree removal operations on September 8 when he suffered a sudden cardiac emergency. Despite the immediate intervention of line paramedics and rapid resuscitation attempts, he tragically could not be revived.
Remembering Hank Hester’s Dedication
Hester was widely respected in the firefighting community, not only for his decades of professional experience but also for his deep commitment to service. At the time of his passing, he was actively engaged in critical safety work—removing hazardous trees that posed risks to firefighting crews battling the Dragon Bravo Fire.
“Hank is a member of our wildfire family and will be deeply missed,” said Incident Commander Matt Rau of the Southwest Area Incident Management Team 3. “Our deepest condolences go out to the Hester family and friends during this very tragic time.”
A Loss Felt Across the Wildland Firefighting Community
The Southwest Area Incident Management Team 3, along with fellow fire crews on the Dragon Bravo Fire, expressed their sorrow at the loss of a man who had long exemplified courage, professionalism, and selflessness.
“The wildland firefighting community feels this loss profoundly and will hold Hank in their hearts and memories,” the team shared in a statement.
Hester’s sudden passing underscores the inherent risks faced not only in fire suppression but also in the physically demanding support roles that keep fire crews safe on the front lines.
Investigation Underway
The National Park Service, in coordination with the Coconino County Medical Examiner, has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Hester’s death. While preliminary reports indicate a cardiac emergency, officials are working to confirm the exact medical cause.
Honoring His Legacy
For colleagues, friends, and family, Hank Hester was more than a firefighter—he was a mentor, a leader, and a symbol of resilience. His work ethic, bravery, and compassion left a lasting mark on those fortunate enough to know and work alongside him.
Support services are being extended to fire crews currently assigned to the Dragon Bravo Fire, ensuring they have access to counseling and peer support during this difficult time.
Hester’s passing serves as a solemn reminder of the toll firefighting takes, both physically and emotionally, on those who dedicate their lives to safeguarding communities against the threat of wildfire.
