LOWELL, Mass. — The University of Massachusetts Lowell was placed on lockdown Wednesday after reports of a person possibly carrying a weapon on campus prompted a heavy police response and widespread concern among students, faculty, and parents.
Lockdown Ordered After Reports Surface
The situation began shortly after noon, when Massachusetts State Police confirmed they were investigating reports of an individual with a firearm near South Campus. A video circulating on social media appeared to show someone holding what looked like a weapon, though police have not yet authenticated the footage.
University officials issued an emergency alert urging everyone on South Campus to shelter in place, lock doors, and stay away from windows. Police officers immediately began sweeping buildings and surrounding areas in an effort to secure the campus.
Students Describe Fear and Uncertainty
For many on campus, the alerts brought moments of panic. Some students reported barricading themselves inside classrooms, while others said they rushed to safe areas and waited anxiously for updates.
“It’s really scary,” said one sophomore who was in a lecture hall when the lockdown began. “We just kept refreshing our phones and waiting to hear that it was over.”
Officials and Leaders Respond
U.S. Rep. Lori Trahan, who represents the district, said her office was monitoring the situation closely. “I am in contact with local and state officials,” she said, urging residents and students to follow law enforcement instructions.
A university spokesperson stressed that safety was the top priority: “This is a fluid situation, and we are working closely with law enforcement. Updates will be provided as soon as more information is available.”
Search Continues; No Injuries Reported
As of late Wednesday afternoon, no injuries had been reported, and police had not confirmed whether a suspect was located. Authorities said the search of South Campus buildings was ongoing and asked anyone with information to come forward.
State Police emphasized that all reports of potential weapons on school grounds are treated with the “utmost seriousness,” even before verification.
A Community on Edge
UMass Lowell, which serves nearly 18,000 students, has not often experienced large-scale lockdowns. Parents rushed to contact their children, and social media filled with messages from anxious students describing the tense atmosphere.
“It’s every parent’s worst nightmare,” said one mother, who drove straight to campus after hearing about the lockdown. “You just want to know your kid is safe.”
Developing Situation
The lockdown remained in effect into the evening, with officials urging patience as searches continued. The university pledged to provide more details once the situation was fully resolved.
“This is still a developing incident,” State Police said. “We will release verified information as soon as possible.”
