Tulsa Man Identified as Justin Mattingly, 36, in Deadly QuikTrip Shooting; Investigation Ongoing

TULSA, Okla. — A tragic late-night shooting outside a Tulsa QuikTrip has claimed the life of 36-year-old Justin Mattingly, leaving a community shaken and investigators working to piece together the events that led to his death.

The incident unfolded around 11:20 p.m. Sunday at the QuikTrip located at 220 N. Gilcrease Museum Road, when officers from the Tulsa Police Department responded to multiple reports of gunfire in the parking lot.

Victim Identified as Justin Mattingly

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Mattingly suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries within minutes.

Police confirmed Mattingly was riding a motorcycle with a friend at the time of the confrontation, which ultimately escalated into gunfire.

Dispute Began Inside the Store

According to detectives, the deadly chain of events began inside the convenience store, where Mattingly and the suspect became involved in a heated altercation. Surveillance video shows the suspect allegedly assaulting Mattingly, after which Mattingly was heard making verbal threats.

The tension quickly escalated, and the conflict spilled outside into the QuikTrip parking lot.

Shooting in the Parking Lot

Investigators say that shortly after the initial altercation, Mattingly and a friend—both on motorcycles—approached the suspect’s vehicle at one of the gas pumps. At that moment, Mattingly allegedly kicked the suspect’s car door before attempting to ride away.

It was then that the suspect, still seated inside his vehicle, fired a single round, striking Mattingly in the head. Witnesses reported chaos in the moments that followed, with bystanders rushing for cover while others attempted to help the victim.

Suspect Detained, No Arrest Made

Police confirmed that the alleged shooter was immediately detained and questioned by detectives. However, he has since been released from custody, as no formal arrest has been made at this stage of the investigation.

Authorities stressed that the case remains active and complex. Investigators are currently compiling all available evidence, including surveillance footage and eyewitness testimony. Once the case file is complete, it will be turned over to the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether criminal charges will be filed.

Community Reaction and Ongoing Investigation

The deadly shooting has sparked concern among Tulsa residents, particularly given the location — a busy gas station frequently visited by late-night travelers.

Police are urging anyone with additional information about the case to come forward.

“This remains an active investigation,” officials said in a statement. “We are working diligently to ensure that every detail is thoroughly reviewed.”

Those with information are encouraged to contact the Tulsa Police Department or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
