TULSA, Okla. — What began as an ordinary Wednesday afternoon in Tulsa ended in heartbreak after a serious crash at one of the city’s busiest intersections claimed the life of 81-year-old Andre Champagne.
Police say the accident happened around 1:00 p.m. on September 3, 2025, at 71st and Yale. According to investigators, a Chevy pickup truck was heading north on Yale when the driver tried to make a left turn. The truck did not yield and was struck by a white Chevy Malibu that was traveling southbound through the intersection with the green light.
The driver of the Malibu, identified as Andre Champagne, suffered critical injuries. First responders worked urgently to free him from the wreckage before rushing him to the hospital. Despite doctors’ efforts, Champagne passed away about an hour later, leaving family, friends, and neighbors stunned by the sudden loss.
The pickup driver was also taken to the hospital, treated for injuries, and later released.
Tulsa Police say their Advanced Traffic Investigators are carefully reviewing the evidence to piece together exactly what happened. Their findings will be turned over to the District Attorney’s Office, which will determine if any charges are filed.
The crash forced major traffic delays at the busy crossroads, but beyond the inconvenience, it has left a lasting mark on the community. Many who knew Champagne describe him as a kindhearted man with deep roots in Tulsa, someone who cared about his family and enjoyed the simple moments of life.
Neighbors have expressed sorrow and support, some even leaving flowers near the intersection. For them, this isn’t just another traffic statistic — it’s the loss of a father, grandfather, and friend whose presence will be deeply missed.
Tulsa Police are reminding drivers to use extra caution when turning across intersections, noting that failure to yield continues to be one of the leading causes of deadly crashes across Oklahoma.
As loved ones prepare to honor Champagne’s life, the tragedy at 71st and Yale serves as a painful reminder of how quickly an everyday drive can change everything.
