ELBA, Ala. — August 22, 2025 — A late-night crash on U.S. Highway 84 just outside Elba has claimed the life of a Troy man, leaving family, friends, and colleagues mourning his sudden passing.
Authorities confirmed that Robert Lane Fennell, 56, of Troy, died at the scene after his semi-truck veered off the highway late Friday night and overturned into a creek.
How the Crash Happened
Emergency crews were dispatched around 11:15 p.m. on Friday, August 22, to reports of a serious wreck near the Elba city-limits sign. When first responders arrived, they found Fennell’s semi-truck upside down down an embankment, partially submerged in a creek.
Despite immediate rescue efforts, Fennell was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not released details about what caused the crash.
Large-Scale Emergency Response
The crash sparked a major response from across Coffee County and beyond. Units from the Elba Fire Department, Opp Fire Department, Dothan Fire Department’s HazMat Team, Coffee County Emergency Management Agency, New Brockton Fire Department, Enterprise Rescue, and the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) all assisted at the scene.
Hazmat teams were called in as a precaution due to the nature of the vehicle involved. Officials say safety measures were put in place quickly to protect the area.
Investigation Continues
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Agencies working the case include the Elba Police Department, Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the 12th Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office, Coffee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Coffee County Coroner’s Office.
Investigators are looking at several possible factors, including weather conditions, driver fatigue, or a mechanical issue.
Community in Mourning
Coffee County Coroner Arnold Woodham called the incident a tragedy and asked the community to keep Fennell’s family in their thoughts.
“This is a tragic incident, and we ask the community to keep the family and friends of Mr. Fennell in your prayers as they navigate this unexpected loss,” Woodham said.
Friends and colleagues described Fennell as a hardworking truck driver who took pride in his work and cared deeply for his family. His sudden death has left many in shock.
