ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The St. Louis community is grieving the loss of Malachi “Antonio” Sykes Jr., a recent graduate of St. Benedict High School, who was tragically murdered just three months after completing high school.
A Life Marked by Courage
Malachi, 18, was known for his bravery and selflessness. During his ninth-grade year at Germantown High School, he intervened when a knife was pulled on his classmate, Judah, pushing him out of harm’s way and confronting the assailant. Friends and family say Malachi’s actions that day saved Judah’s life, highlighting his courage and protective nature.
A family member reflected, “My son witnessed the highest of highs and the lowest of lows in one night. While Judah had the game of his life, 3.2 miles away, Malachi was murdered.”
Faith and Community Support
Malachi had embraced his Christian faith, becoming a source of inspiration for those around him. In the wake of the tragedy, St. Benedict coaches and staff provided spiritual support to students, praying over them as they coped with the shock and grief. One coach reportedly prayed in tongues during the emotional gathering.
“I told Judah he once had an Angel on earth; now he has one in Heaven,” a family member said, reflecting on Malachi’s enduring influence.

Family and friends describe Malachi as a bright, caring, and courageous young man who had a profound impact on everyone he met. His sudden death has left a deep void in the St. Louis community, and his heroism and compassion are remembered by those whose lives he touched.
