KIOWA, Ariz. — A busy stretch of Highway 95 near the Circle K gas station turned chaotic Saturday afternoon when a six-vehicle collision left multiple people injured and shut down traffic for several hours. Authorities are investigating whether a medical emergency suffered by one of the drivers may have triggered the chain-reaction crash.
The accident happened around 3:30 p.m., according to the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office. Witnesses reported seeing a northbound vehicle suddenly veer across lanes and collide with several cars waiting at a stoplight near the Circle K convenience store. The impact caused a domino effect, involving six vehicles in total and scattering debris across the roadway.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene within minutes. Fire crews worked to extricate at least two individuals trapped inside their vehicles. Several others sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities have not yet confirmed the total number of people hospitalized, but officials said no fatalities had been reported as of Saturday evening.
Witnesses at the scene told investigators the driver believed to have caused the crash appeared to lose control just before the collision. “It looked like he slumped over the wheel,” said one bystander, who added that the vehicle did not appear to slow down before impact. Authorities said they are investigating the possibility that the driver may have suffered a stroke or another type of medical emergency while behind the wheel.
The driver in question was taken to a local hospital, where doctors are evaluating his condition. Officials have not released his identity, citing medical privacy concerns.
Traffic along Highway 95 was diverted for more than three hours as crews cleared wreckage, towed disabled vehicles, and cleaned up spilled fuel. By early evening, all lanes were reopened, though authorities warned drivers to expect residual delays.
The crash drew a large crowd of onlookers near the busy intersection, many of whom expressed shock at the severity of the pileup. “It was terrifying — cars were just smashing into each other,” said another witness. “I’ve never seen something like that so close to home.”
Investigators are working to reconstruct the crash and confirm whether a medical emergency was the primary cause. Toxicology reports and a review of dashcam and surveillance footage from nearby businesses will also play a role in determining what happened.
Authorities praised the quick response of first responders, who were able to stabilize injured victims and prevent further harm. “This could have been much worse,” said a sheriff’s office spokesperson. “Thanks to the fast actions of our fire and EMS teams, lives were saved today.”
The incident remains under active investigation.
