BATON ROUGE, La. — The Prescott Academy community and the Baton Rouge area are mourning the heartbreaking loss of Michael Nelson Jr., a 13-year-old 6th-grade student who tragically passed away this past weekend. Michael Jr. was the beloved son of Michael Nelson Sr. and Daisey Perry, both devoted employees of Louisiana State University (LSU) in the Building Services Department.
Tragic Loss Shakes the Community
Michael Jr.’s sudden passing has left family, friends, and classmates in deep shock. Teachers and students at Prescott Academy described him as a bright, compassionate, and cheerful student whose energy and enthusiasm brought warmth to the classroom.
“Michael was always eager to learn and quick to help his classmates,” said Principal Laura Martinez. “He had a smile that could light up a room, and his presence will be sorely missed by everyone at Prescott Academy.”
Remembering a Bright and Caring Young Life
Michael Jr. was known for his infectious laughter, kindness, and adventurous spirit. Though only 13, he made a lasting impact on those around him, both at school and within the Baton Rouge community. Outside of school, he loved spending time with family, exploring his interests, and building friendships that he cherished deeply.
“He had a big heart and a joyful personality that drew people to him,” said a family friend. “Michael’s spirit and positivity will never be forgotten.”
Supporting the Nelson Family
The Baton Rouge and LSU communities have come together in an outpouring of love and support for Michael Jr.’s grieving family. His parents, Michael Sr. and Daisey, are facing every parent’s worst nightmare, and friends, neighbors, and colleagues are organizing donations to assist with funeral arrangements and related expenses.
“This tragedy calls on all of us — friends, neighbors, and community members — to stand with the Nelson family in love and solidarity,” said a local organizer. “Every gesture of support, no matter how small, can make a difference for the family.”
