PEORIA, IL – The Central Illinois community is mourning the loss of Shaun Newell, a respected media professional and passionate advocate for survivors of abuse. Newell, who lived in Peoria and previously served as News Director at WMBD, passed away after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was originally from Franklin, Illinois, and is remembered as a man of integrity, compassion, and leadership.
Newell’s dedication to public service extended far beyond his career in journalism. He was the Immediate Past President of the Center for Prevention of Abuse’s (CFPA) Board of Directors, where he played a vital role in advancing the organization’s mission to protect and support survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and other forms of abuse.

His service helped shape the vision of the CFPA, strengthened programs across the region, and ensured that every survivor who sought help was met with dignity, respect, and hope.
“Shaun’s legacy is one of courage, kindness, fairness, and unwavering commitment to peace,” the Center for Prevention of Abuse shared in a statement. “Through his guidance, we built programs that will continue to support survivors for years to come. Though his light continues to shine, he will be deeply missed.”
Newell was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the beginning of the year, a battle he faced with remarkable strength and resilience. Even as he navigated his own health struggles, he continued to put others first, demonstrating the selflessness and determination that defined his life’s work.
Friends, colleagues, and community members are now reflecting on the profound impact Newell made, both in the newsroom and in advocacy. His leadership was instrumental in ensuring that the voices of survivors were heard and their needs met. Beyond his professional achievements, he is remembered for his kindness, his willingness to listen, and his ability to bring people together for a greater purpose.
The community extends its deepest condolences to Shaun’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working alongside him. In honor of his memory, the team at the Center for Prevention of Abuse has recommitted themselves to continuing the work he so deeply believed in.
Shaun Newell’s passing is a tremendous loss, but his legacy lives on—in the survivors he championed, the colleagues he inspired, and the countless lives he touched with his compassion and dedication.
