ENFIELD, N.C. — A quiet Halifax County neighborhood was rattled in the early hours of Sunday morning after multiple shooters opened fire on a residence and vehicle along Freedom Street, prompting a large-scale response from local law enforcement.
Authorities say the incident occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m., when at least two suspects discharged handguns from separate positions, striking an occupied home and a parked car outside. The barrage of gunfire left the community shaken but, remarkably, no injuries have been reported at this time.
Officers from the Enfield Police Department and deputies with the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office responded within minutes after several frantic 911 calls reported the sound of shots in the area. When law enforcement arrived, they secured the scene, combed through the street for shell casings, and began gathering statements from residents.
Investigators believe the suspects deliberately targeted the home, though no motive has been released. Police confirmed the house was occupied during the shooting, raising the level of concern among neighbors and authorities alike.
“This was a reckless act of violence that could have ended in tragedy,” an Enfield Police spokesperson said Sunday afternoon. “We are grateful no lives were lost, but make no mistake—we are committed to identifying those responsible and bringing them into custody.”
Residents described the terrifying moments when the gunfire erupted. One longtime neighbor recalled hearing the shots echo across the block:
“I woke up thinking it was fireworks at first, but then it just kept going—shot after shot. I hit the floor. It was terrifying to think people were inside that house while bullets were flying through the walls.”
Police and deputies canvassed the area through the morning, speaking with witnesses and checking nearby surveillance cameras. Evidence collected at the scene is being processed, and authorities say they are confident that the shooters will be identified.
Local leaders expressed frustration over the continued presence of gun violence in Halifax County, urging residents to share any information that might help the investigation. “We can’t allow these kinds of crimes to terrorize our neighborhoods,” one community advocate said. “If you know something, please say something.”
The Enfield Police Department and Halifax County Sheriff’s Office are asking anyone with information to come forward, either directly or through anonymous tip lines.
The investigation remains active, and officials are expected to release additional details as leads develop.
