Man Dead After Shooting Near Gas Station in West Macon; Suspect in Custody, Coroner Confirms

MACON, Ga. — A man has died after being shot near a west Macon gas station on Sunday morning, and authorities say a suspect has already been taken into custody.

According to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones, the shooting happened near the Murphy USA gas station in the 6000 block of Harrison Road. Deputies with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the area after receiving a 911 call about a possible shooting shortly after 9:30 a.m.

When deputies arrived, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency responders transported him to Atrium Health Navicent Medical Center in downtown Macon, but despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at approximately 10:15 a.m.

The victim’s name has not been released pending notification of family.

Shooter in Custody

Coroner Leon Jones confirmed that the shooter is in custody, though the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office has not yet provided details on the suspect’s identity or possible charges. Authorities have not clarified what led to the gunfire, but investigators are working to piece together the circumstances surrounding the deadly encounter.

The shooting rattled neighbors and passersby, many of whom were at the busy gas station on Sunday morning. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as deputies and emergency medical crews rushed to the area.

“People were running and ducking down — it was scary,” said one witness who was pumping gas nearby. “I didn’t know what was going on until I saw the police swarm the place.”

Residents say the Harrison Road corridor, which sees heavy daily traffic and commercial activity, has experienced increasing violence in recent years. “It’s becoming too common,” said another resident. “Something has to change.”

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that investigators are interviewing witnesses, reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses, and working to determine whether the shooting was targeted or stemmed from an altercation.
