LANE COUNTY, Ore. – A Springfield man lost his life in a devastating crash on Highway 126E after striking a deer in the early morning hours of Friday, September 5, 2025.
According to the Oregon State Police (OSP), the fatal incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. near milepost 21 in Lane County. The victim has been identified as 38-year-old Lucas Charles Thomas of Springfield, who was riding an eastbound Suzuki GXR motorcycle at the time of the crash.
Deer Strike Leads to Tragedy
Investigators determined that Thomas’s motorcycle collided with a deer, causing him to lose control. The bike veered off the roadway, sending Thomas down an embankment. Despite emergency response, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The crash prompted a temporary closure of the highway for about one hour as OSP troopers and Lane County authorities conducted an on-scene investigation.
Roadway Dangers in Rural Oregon
Highway 126E is a well-traveled corridor connecting Eugene to the McKenzie River Valley, and collisions with wildlife are a recurring danger, particularly for motorcyclists. OSP has long warned drivers to be vigilant when traveling in rural areas during early morning or late evening hours when deer and other animals are most active.
Community Mourning the Loss
News of Lucas Charles Thomas’s passing has spread through Springfield, leaving family, friends, and neighbors grieving the sudden and heartbreaking loss. At just 38 years old, Thomas’s life was cut short in a tragic accident that underscores the hazards many rural Oregon drivers face.
Investigation Continues
Authorities confirmed that no other vehicles were involved. The Oregon State Police are continuing their investigation, though officials say the deer strike was the primary cause of the crash.
OSP troopers were assisted at the scene by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and local fire crews. Funeral arrangements for Thomas have not yet been announced.
