FLINT, Mich. — An 18-year-old man from Flint has been formally charged in connection with the deadly shooting that claimed the life of a young woman and left a teenager wounded during a community celebration earlier this month.
On Friday morning, Terrance Deniod Green Jr., 18, was arraigned in the 67th District Court of Genesee County. He faces homicide charges for the August 10 shooting death of 18-year-old Jayla Keel. In addition to the murder charge, Green has been charged with felony weapons offenses and assault with intent to murder a 16-year-old Flint boy who was also injured in the same incident.
Green is currently being held in the Genesee County Jail without bond, reflecting the seriousness of the charges.
The shooting took place around 10:05 p.m. on Sunday, August 10, in the area of East 2nd Street and Harrison Street, where a large crowd of roughly 2,000 people had gathered to celebrate “810 Day”, a popular local event marking Flint’s area code.
According to investigators, shots were fired into the crowd, striking two victims. Jayla Keel, just 18 years old, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a local hospital, where she later died. A 16-year-old boy from Flint was also shot but survived and is recovering after being treated at a local hospital.
The violence sent shockwaves through the Flint community, turning what was supposed to be a festive evening into a night of heartbreak. Keel’s death marked yet another devastating example of how gun violence continues to affect families across Genesee County.
Michigan State Police Lt. Fahad Qureshi, commander of the Flint Post, addressed the tragedy in a statement following Green’s arraignment.
“Recent senseless acts of gun violence have left a lasting impact on our community,” Qureshi said. “An arrest has been made in this case, and we are committed to ensuring that justice is served. We urge the Flint community to remain engaged, report suspicious activity, and work alongside MSP and Flint PD to create safer neighborhoods.”
For investigators, the focus now shifts to building a strong case to hold Green accountable. Authorities are also calling on community members to continue to come forward with information that could assist in solving not just this shooting, but other violent crimes in the city.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-JAIL (5245), use the P3Tips mobile app, or submit tips online at P3Tips.com/488. Officials emphasize that even small details can make a big difference in ongoing investigations.
The loss of Jayla Keel has left a void in the lives of her family and friends, many of whom gathered to honor her memory in the days following the shooting. The teenager wounded that night continues to recover, but the emotional scars left on witnesses and the community remain deep.
As Flint grieves, the arraignment of Terrance Green offers some reassurance that progress is being made in the pursuit of justice. Still, the tragedy serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need for solutions to gun violence, which has touched far too many families across Michigan.
