Heavy Police Presence After Shooting at Lawton Walmart on Sheridan Road

 

LAWTON, Okla. — A routine afternoon of shopping turned into chaos on Tuesday when gunfire erupted at the Walmart located on Sheridan Road, prompting an urgent response from the Lawton Police Department and emergency medical personnel.

Authorities confirmed that a shooting occurred inside or near the store, sending customers and employees scrambling for safety. Witnesses described frantic scenes as families rushed out of the building, while others hid inside aisles until police arrived.

Lawton Police officers, along with first responders, quickly secured the area and established a perimeter around the parking lot. Shoppers who had left belongings inside were kept at a safe distance as crime scene investigators worked to gather evidence.

“We can confirm an incident involving gunfire took place here today,” a Lawton Police spokesperson said. “At this time, the situation is under control, and there is no further threat to the public. Our officers are continuing to investigate what led to the shooting.”

The Walmart was temporarily closed while detectives reviewed security footage and interviewed witnesses. As of Tuesday evening, authorities had not released details about possible suspects, the number of individuals involved, or the condition of any victims.

Several residents who were in the area described the scene as terrifying. “I just heard loud pops, and people started running. I grabbed my kids and ran too,” one shopper recalled. Another witness added, “You never think it’s going to happen when you’re just trying to get groceries.”

City officials said they are working closely with police to provide updates and ensure that resources, including counseling support, are available for anyone traumatized by the event.

Lawton residents took to social media to express both shock and gratitude for the swift response from law enforcement. Many praised the quick actions of first responders, crediting them with preventing further tragedy.
