FLORENCE, Miss — The Florence community is mourning the sudden and tragic loss of Eric Bridges, a devoted teacher, coach, husband, and father who was killed in a car accident late Thursday night. His death has left family, friends, colleagues, and former students devastated, as they remember him for his kindness, leadership, and dedication to young people.
A Life of Service and Dedication
For nearly 20 years, Bridges was a cornerstone at Florence Middle School, where he served as both teacher and coach. Known for his steady presence on the sidelines and in the classroom, he built a reputation as a mentor who inspired his students to strive for excellence both in sports and in life.
“Coach Bridges wasn’t just about wins and losses,” said one former athlete. “He cared about us as people. He made us believe in ourselves, and that’s something we’ll carry forever.”
Beloved by Family and Community
Eric Bridges was the cherished son of Mary Wright Lea and Ronald Lynn Bridges, stepson of Johnny Lea, and the loving husband of Crystal Bridges. Those who knew him best describe him as a man of faith, love, and loyalty, who poured the same devotion into his family as he did into his work with students.
Parents in the Florence district remembered him as someone who treated their children like his own. “The way he encouraged, guided, and supported our kids will never be forgotten,” said one parent.
School and Community Tributes
The Florence School District released a statement honoring Bridges’ life and career:
“We are forever grateful for the impact Coach Bridges made on our program, our athletes, and our community. His legacy will live on in every player who puts on an Eagle uniform.”
At Florence Middle School, students left handwritten notes and posters at the entrance, while coaches placed a whistle and football at the gym doors as a silent tribute. On social media, tributes poured in from former athletes, colleagues, and parents sharing how Bridges touched their lives.
Funeral and Visitation Services
To honor his memory, the Bridges family has announced the following arrangements at First Baptist Church Florence:
- Visitation: Friday, 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
- Visitation: Saturday, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
- Funeral Service: Saturday, 11:00 a.m.
A large turnout is expected, as the Florence community prepares to say goodbye to a man whose influence extended far beyond the classroom.
A Legacy That Endures
Though his life ended far too soon, the impact of Eric Bridges will continue to shape the lives of the students and athletes he mentored. His lessons of perseverance, teamwork, and compassion will echo in Florence for generations.
“Coach Bridges taught us more than sports — he taught us about life, about respect, and about never giving up,” said a fellow educator. “His spirit will always live on in this community.”
As Florence gathers to grieve, it also celebrates the life of a man who gave his all to others. Eric Bridges will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
