GILBERT, Minn. — Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal ATV crash that occurred Sunday morning at the Gilbert Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) Park as 26-year-old Tia Muller of Chisholm, a respected member of the Cherry Fire Department.
According to the Gilbert Police Department, the crash happened shortly after emergency crews were dispatched to the OHV Park, where personnel from multiple agencies responded to the scene. Muller was pronounced dead following the accident, while her husband, 25-year-old Johnathan Muller of Chisholm, who was operating the ATV, sustained serious injuries and remains hospitalized at Essentia Health–St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.
Crash Response at OHV Park
Officials said the incident unfolded at the Gilbert OHV Park, a popular recreation area in northern Minnesota known for its off-road trails. Emergency responders from several departments—including Gilbert Police, Gilbert Fire, St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, and Virginia Fire and Ambulance—arrived at the scene to provide assistance.
Despite their best efforts, authorities confirmed that Tia Muller did not survive her injuries. Her husband was airlifted from the scene and is currently receiving medical care. His condition has not yet been updated publicly.
Community Mourning a Dedicated Firefighter
The news of Muller’s passing has shaken the Chisholm and Cherry communities, where she was well-known for her service with the Cherry Fire Department. Colleagues described her as a dedicated first responder, someone who was always ready to help others in times of crisis.
“Losing one of our own in such a sudden and tragic way is devastating,” a fellow firefighter shared in an online tribute. “Tia had a heart for service and was deeply respected in our department.”
Community members have also taken to social media to share condolences and prayers for the Muller family, especially for Johnathan as he continues to fight for recovery.
Investigation Underway
The Gilbert Police Department confirmed that an investigation into the crash remains ongoing. Details about what led to the ATV accident have not yet been released.
Authorities noted that the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is also assisting with the investigation, given that the incident occurred on state-managed recreation land.
The Gilbert Police said in their official statement:
“On behalf of all responding agencies, our thoughts are with the Muller family, the Cherry Fire Department, and all who are grieving this loss.”
ATV Safety in Minnesota
This tragedy highlights the ongoing risks associated with ATV use, even for experienced riders. The Minnesota DNR routinely emphasizes the importance of helmets, proper speed management, and safe handling practices when riding on designated trails and OHV parks.
According to state records, ATV-related crashes have been a recurring concern, particularly in northern Minnesota where trail riding is a popular recreational activity. Authorities are reminding riders to stay vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines to help prevent further tragedies.
