The Fayetteville community is mourning the loss of 64-year-old Luz E. Arroyo, who tragically died Sunday morning in a devastating accident on Morganton Road.
The crash occurred just after 11:00 a.m. between Hearthstone Drive and Kendallwood Avenue, near True Vines Ministries Church. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with bystanders rushing toward the wreckage to try to help. One passerby performed CPR on Arroyo while others flagged down emergency crews. According to Fayetteville Police, 41-year-old Richard B. Goodyear of Fayetteville was driving a 2022 Dodge Ram pickup truck westbound at a high rate of speed. His vehicle struck the rear of Arroyo’s 2019 Volkswagen SUV with such force that it pushed her car off the roadway and into a utility pole.
Emergency responders, including police, firefighters, and EMS, arrived within minutes. Tragically, Luz Arroyo was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Cumberland County Medical Examiner.
Goodyear sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition. Authorities have confirmed that he faces multiple charges, including:
