CHICAGO, IL — A 19-year-old man, identified as Deneal P. Maxey (Lilneal “Cantgetright”), a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, was killed Wednesday morning in a brazen daylight shooting that has once again shaken a Chicago neighborhood already plagued by ongoing gun violence.
The Shooting Incident
According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), the incident occurred shortly before noon when Lilneal was standing near a sidewalk on the city’s West Side.
Police say two unidentified men approached him and, without warning, pulled out firearms before opening fire. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots ring out in quick succession, leaving residents scrambling for cover.
Lilneal sustained a gunshot wound to the head and multiple wounds to his body. Emergency crews rushed him to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later despite medical efforts to save him.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not yet confirmed a motive. CPD detectives from the Area Four bureau are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and interviewing potential witnesses.
The shooters reportedly fled the scene on foot, though police have not released a description at this time. No arrests have been made.
Community Reaction
Residents in the area expressed grief and frustration at yet another young life lost to senseless violence. Community activists say the incident underscores the urgent need for continued efforts to curb gun violence and provide resources for at-risk youth.
“This young man had his whole life ahead of him,” said one neighbor. “Now his family is left planning a funeral instead of a future.”
Larger Context
Chicago has struggled with a persistent surge of shootings in 2025. According to CPD statistics, gun violence remains one of the city’s most pressing public safety challenges, disproportionately impacting younger residents.
Call for Safety and Support
Authorities are urging anyone with information about Wednesday’s fatal shooting to come forward. Tipsters can contact CPD Area Four detectives or provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
As the investigation continues, community members are planning a candlelight vigil to honor Lilneal’s memory. Though he lived in Las Vegas, his ties to Chicago and the tragic circumstances of his death have left loved ones mourning across both cities.
