Dallas Tragedy: Mother and 3-Year-Old Son Killed in Shooting; Suspect Takes Own Life

DALLAS, TEXAS — A devastating shooting in Dallas has left a mother and her 3-year-old son dead, with police confirming that the suspect—a man known to the victims—died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The tragedy has shaken the community, prompting grief and questions over the events leading to the violence.

Investigation and Victim Identification

Dallas police responded to a shooting call on Saturday afternoon in a residential neighborhood in the 2300 block of Mariposa Drive. Upon arrival, officers found three individuals with gunshot wounds inside a home.

Authorities say Lalit Pradhan, 53, shot Ranjana Shrestha, 37, and her young son, Pranish Pradhan, before turning the gun on himself. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the identities of the victims and the suspect on Sunday.

Both Shrestha and her son were pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly afterward.

Motive Still Under Investigation

While police have not publicly confirmed a motive, investigators believe the suspect and victims had a personal relationship. Officials are interviewing relatives, neighbors, and acquaintances to better understand the events that led up to the shooting.

Detectives are also examining whether domestic tensions or disputes may have played a role. Police stress that this was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Community Shock and Grief

Neighbors say the victims were kind, friendly, and deeply involved in the local community. Shrestha was remembered as a loving mother who was devoted to her son, and little Pranish was described as “a bright light” who brought joy to everyone who met him.

“This is beyond heartbreaking,” said a neighbor who had known the family for years. “They were good people, and it’s hard to believe something like this could happen in our neighborhood.”

Dallas Police Statement

In a press release, the Dallas Police Department expressed condolences to the victims’ family and urged residents to reach out for help in situations involving domestic disputes.

“This was a tragic and senseless act of violence,” the statement read. “We encourage anyone who feels unsafe in their home or relationship to seek immediate assistance through local support services.”

Domestic Violence Awareness

The incident has renewed focus on the importance of addressing domestic violence and mental health concerns before they escalate. Advocates stress that early intervention can save lives, and they are urging residents to utilize available crisis hotlines and support programs.

In Dallas, resources include the Genesis Women’s Shelter (214-946-HELP) and the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.

Moving Forward

Friends and relatives of Shrestha and Pranish are now left to grieve an unimaginable loss. A community vigil is being organized to honor their memory, offering residents a space to gather, light candles, and reflect on the lives cut short.

Local leaders have promised to work closely with law enforcement and advocacy groups to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
