Dallas, TX — A tense standoff in Dallas ended tragically Tuesday night when SWAT officers shot and killed Martin Benes, a licensed attorney with the State Bar of Texas, after he reportedly charged at them with a knife.
According to Dallas police, officers were initially dispatched to a home in the city following reports of a disturbance. When they arrived, they encountered a woman in distress inside the residence. Authorities said she was safely escorted out without injury.
Benes, however, refused to leave the property and barricaded himself inside. Negotiators spent a significant amount of time attempting to persuade him to surrender peacefully, but their efforts were unsuccessful.
As the standoff escalated, the Dallas Police Department’s SWAT team was deployed to the scene. When officers eventually entered the home, police say Benes armed himself with a knife and charged at the team.
“In that moment, the officers feared for their safety and were forced to use their weapons,” a Dallas police spokesperson said. Multiple shots were fired, striking Benes. Emergency medical aid was rendered immediately, but he was later pronounced dead.
No officers were injured during the confrontation.
Authorities later confirmed the suspect as Martin Benes, a practicing attorney in Dallas listed with the State Bar of Texas. Court records show he was licensed in the state and had an active law practice. Details about his legal career or any personal struggles leading up to the incident have not yet been released.
The Dallas Police Department’s Special Investigations Unit and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office are now reviewing the shooting. As is standard protocol, the officers involved will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Police officials announced that further information will be shared during a scheduled news conference Wednesday morning, where they are expected to provide additional clarity on the timeline of events, the number of officers involved, and whether body camera footage will be released.
The news of Benes’ death has drawn significant attention within Dallas’ legal community. Colleagues and local attorneys expressed shock at the events, with some calling for a deeper look into the personal circumstances that may have contributed to the deadly standoff.
“This is an incredibly tragic situation for everyone involved,” one local attorney said, emphasizing the difficult position faced by police when confronted with an armed suspect.
Community members have also voiced concerns about mental health resources and crisis response, noting that incidents involving armed standoffs often point to deeper underlying issues.
Authorities are expected to release additional details after reviewing body camera footage and interviewing officers and witnesses. The Dallas Police Department has also pledged transparency throughout the investigation.
While the circumstances remain under scrutiny, the incident has left both the Dallas legal community and local residents shaken, raising broader questions about how standoffs of this nature are handled and what more can be done to prevent them from ending in tragedy.
