CHICAGO, Ill. — A late-night altercation inside a South Loop business ended in tragedy Friday when a 31-year-old man was fatally shot during a struggle with an employee. Police have since arrested the employee, identified as 33-year-old Souleymane Diallo of Chicago, on murder charges.
Details of the Incident
According to the Chicago Police Department, officers were called to the 1300 block of South Michigan Avenue at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5. When they arrived, they discovered a 31-year-old man suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
Authorities say the victim was involved in a confrontation with Diallo, a male employee at the business. The argument escalated and turned physical, at which point Diallo allegedly pulled out a handgun.
During the ensuing struggle, the weapon discharged, striking the victim. Paramedics treated him at the scene, but despite emergency efforts, he later died from his injuries. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of family.
Arrest and Charges
Police confirmed that Diallo was taken into custody at the scene without further incident. A firearm was recovered by investigators.
Diallo has been charged with:
- One felony count of first-degree murder
- One felony count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon/loaded/no FOID
Authorities noted that Diallo did not possess a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card, which is required under Illinois law to legally own or carry a firearm.
Next Steps in Court
Diallo is scheduled to appear for a detention hearing on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2025, where a judge will determine whether he will be held in custody while awaiting trial. Prosecutors with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office are expected to outline the evidence against him during the proceedings.
If convicted, Diallo faces the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence.
Community Concerns
The fatal shooting has left South Loop residents shaken, raising concerns about safety in one of Chicago’s busiest mixed-use neighborhoods. The area, lined with businesses, restaurants, and residential high-rises, typically sees heavy foot traffic, especially on weekends.
Local business owners expressed shock over the incident. “This is a safe neighborhood, and something like this is very unsettling,” one nearby shop owner said. “We hope justice is served and that the community can feel secure again.”
Ongoing Investigation
The Chicago Police Department’s Area Three detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the fatal struggle. Authorities have not yet disclosed what prompted the confrontation between the victim and Diallo.
Officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant information to come forward.
For now, the focus remains on securing justice for the victim and providing answers to a shaken community as the legal process moves forward.
