OREM, Utah — Conservative activist Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, sending shockwaves across the nation and igniting confusion over the role of a man briefly detained at the scene.
Kirk, 30, was delivering remarks to a packed auditorium when gunfire erupted. Utah House Speaker Mike Schultz later confirmed Kirk’s death, calling it a “tragic and senseless act” that left the campus community reeling.
Questions Surround George Hodgson Zinn
In the hours after the shooting, video circulated showing George Hodgson Zinn, a local man with a reputation for causing disruptions, being handcuffed by police. That led to speculation online that he was the shooter.
However, law enforcement later clarified that Zinn was not responsible for the attack. Though he remains categorized as a “person of interest” as investigators review witness accounts, officials stressed that he has been cleared of suspicion in the actual shooting.
Shooter Fired from a Distance
Authorities revealed that the gunfire did not originate inside the venue but appeared to come from about 200 meters away. Witnesses also reported seeing a person on a nearby rooftop shortly before the shots rang out.
The FBI confirmed late Wednesday that the suspected shooter is in custody. No identity or motive has yet been disclosed.
Campus Plunged Into Panic
Initial reports from Utah Valley University added to the confusion. Early statements suggested Kirk had been shot but his condition was unknown, and the suspect was still at large. Within hours, however, his death was confirmed, and the campus was shut down for the remainder of the day.
Videos from the scene showed students and attendees fleeing for safety as police and campus security converged on the building.
National Leaders Respond
The attack has sparked an outpouring of reaction nationwide. Utah Senator Mike Lee urged prayers for Kirk and the university community, while Vice President JD Vance called Kirk “a genuinely good guy and a young father.”
Kirk’s Influence
Charlie Kirk was a nationally recognized figure in conservative politics. At just 30, he had built Turning Point USA into one of the most influential student organizations promoting conservative values across American campuses.
University officials said Utah Valley University will remain closed until further notice as the investigation continues. Authorities have assured the public there is no indication of an ongoing threat.
Additional details, including the identity of the suspected gunman, are expected to be released in the coming days.
