BOSTON, Mass. — Authorities confirmed Thursday that a series of swatting calls across Boston included a reported active shooter situation at the University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston), prompting a significant law enforcement response.
Officials have since clarified that no shots were fired, no victims were located, and the situation was ultimately determined to be a false alarm. Law enforcement personnel remain on scene to ensure campus safety and confirm that the threats posed no real danger.
Initial Response and Campus Reaction
The incident caused widespread alarm after several students and community members reported hearing what they believed to be gunfire. Emergency responders, including Boston Police, campus police, and multiple ambulance units, quickly arrived at the scene as a precaution.
Two female students residing in campus housing told local media that they were able to contact friends inside the residence halls, who reported being instructed to shelter in place until the situation was resolved.
The university initially issued a social media alert describing the matter as a “police incident,” which was later elevated to a “public safety threat” as more reports came in. Early posts suggested that the incident originated at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, located adjacent to the UMass Boston campus.
Follow-up advisories redirected focus to a residence hall, where students were instructed to remain inside their rooms while authorities assessed the situation.
Confirmation of False Alarm
By Thursday afternoon, Boston Police and UMass Boston Police confirmed that the reports of an active shooter were unfounded. No evidence of gunfire or injuries has been discovered. Officials emphasized that the incident is part of a pattern of swatting calls made across Boston on Thursday.
Swatting, a dangerous and illegal practice, involves making false emergency reports designed to prompt a large law enforcement response, often putting both first responders and the public at risk.
University Statement
UMass Boston urged students, staff, and the public to remain cautious while assuring the community that there was no ongoing threat. Officials stated that the situation is under continued investigation and that further information will be provided as it becomes available.
“This type of incident underscores the risks associated with false emergency reports,” a university spokesperson said. “We are working closely with Boston Police to ensure the safety of everyone on campus and to prevent future incidents.”
As authorities continue to investigate, the community is being reminded to follow official channels for verified updates and safety instructions.
