Berwyn Educator Nerissa Lee and Her Mother Killed in School Shooting; Husband Identified as Gunman

BERWYN, Ill — The Berwyn community is reeling after a devastating domestic-related shooting outside Lincoln Middle School on Tuesday afternoon left three people dead, including a beloved assistant principal.

Authorities confirmed that 44-year-old Nerissa Lee, assistant principal of Lincoln Middle School, and her mother were fatally shot in the school’s parking lot by Lee’s husband, 54-year-old Steven T. Lee, who later turned the gun on himself as police arrived.

The Shooting Incident

The tragedy unfolded just after 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, when Steven Lee approached the victims’ vehicle and opened fire with a rifle. Both Nerissa and her mother were struck and killed instantly.

Police said Steven then turned the weapon on himself as officers pulled into the parking lot, dying at the scene. The incident was classified as domestic-related violence, according to Berwyn officials.

At the time of the shooting, students were still inside the school for afterschool programs and activities. They were immediately placed on lockdown after the shots rang out. Fortunately, no students or staff inside the building were physically injured.

The school remained closed on Wednesday, with grief counselors available for both staff and students.

Community in Shock

The news has sent shockwaves throughout Berwyn and the broader school community. Many students and parents describe Lee as a passionate, compassionate, and deeply committed educator who treated her students as her own.

“She always had time for the kids. She made every student feel valued,” said one parent outside the school, holding back tears. “She believed in education, but more than that, she believed in her students’ futures.”

Fellow educators also remembered Lee for her dedication. Colleagues said she often stayed late at school, organized events, and worked tirelessly to support struggling students.

Remembering Nerissa Lee

Beyond her administrative role, Lee was known as a mentor and advocate for young people. Parents noted that she worked closely with families to ensure students were supported both academically and emotionally.

“She didn’t just run a school program — she built relationships,” said another teacher. “She wanted every child to succeed, no matter their background or challenges.”

Her mother, who was also killed in the attack, was described as a supportive figure in her daughter’s life, often seen accompanying her to school events.

School District Response

In a statement, Berwyn North School District officials expressed their devastation:

“We are heartbroken over the tragic loss of Assistant Principal Nerissa Lee and her mother. Ms. Lee was an extraordinary educator who touched countless lives. Our thoughts are with her family, colleagues, and all the students who loved her.”

The district confirmed that additional counselors and crisis response teams would remain on site for as long as needed.

Broader Impact

This tragedy highlights once again the devastating effects of domestic violence spilling into public spaces. Community leaders are urging families to seek support services and are reminding the public of the resources available for those experiencing abuse.

Moving Forward

While classes are expected to resume later this week, officials acknowledged that healing will take much longer. Parents have already begun leaving flowers, candles, and handwritten notes outside the school’s entrance, turning the site into a growing memorial.

“This community lost more than an educator. We lost a leader, a mentor, and a role model,” said one school board member. “Her legacy will live on through the countless students whose lives she helped shape.”
