Beloved Cleveland Teacher and Wife Killed in Fiery North Carolina Crash

CLEVELAND, OH — A tragic crash in North Carolina has claimed the lives of Donald and Maria Nunney, a Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) teacher and his wife. The devastating news has left students, colleagues, and the Cleveland community in mourning.

 

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the single-vehicle accident happened around 1:30 p.m. Friday along Interstate 85 northbound and Interstate 40 eastbound, near Chapel Hill at mile marker 161.

Troopers said the car went off the road into nearby woods, where it burst into flames. Four people were inside the vehicle. Donald and Maria Nunney died at the scene.

The other three occupants were rushed to hospitals. One was flown by medical helicopter, while two others were taken by ambulance. Their conditions remain unknown.

News of the Nunneys’ deaths spread quickly through the Cleveland school system Friday evening.

Donald Nunney, a longtime CMSD teacher, was known for his passion in the classroom and unwavering commitment to his students. He was described as a mentor who believed in the potential of every child he taught.

Maria Nunney, his wife, was remembered as a loving, supportive presence in the community. Friends say the couple’s bond was inspiring, their kindness unforgettable.

“They were two of the most genuine people you could ever meet,” one colleague said. “This is a huge loss for everyone who knew them.”

Community in Shock

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District released a statement mourning the loss and extending condolences to the family, friends, staff, and students touched by the couple’s lives. Counseling services are being made available for students and colleagues.

On social media, tributes poured in from former students, fellow teachers, and community members. “He was the teacher who believed in me when no one else did,” one student wrote. “Mr. Nunney changed my life.”

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities are still investigating what caused the vehicle to veer off the road. Officials confirmed no other vehicles were involved.

Traffic along I-85/40 was backed up for hours Friday afternoon as emergency crews worked the scene.

As Cleveland mourns, many say the Nunneys will be remembered not only for their professional dedication but also for their warmth, generosity, and the love they shared with all around them.
