BATON ROUGE, La. — A 36-year-old woman was killed early Sunday morning in a deadly shooting on Baton Rouge’s Plank Road, an incident police say erupted during a large fight that turned violent.
The Baton Rouge Police Department (BRPD) identified the victim as Jonique Brown, who was found shortly before 4:00 a.m. with multiple gunshot wounds in the 3400 block of Plank Road. Despite swift emergency response, Brown was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fight Escalates Into Gunfire
Investigators said the violence began when a large altercation broke out, escalating quickly into chaos as multiple individuals began firing weapons.
Detectives are working to determine the exact sequence of events that led to Brown’s death and whether she was a direct target or an unintended victim caught in the crossfire.
“This was a chaotic scene with several people involved,” a BRPD spokesperson stated. “We are gathering every piece of evidence to ensure those responsible are held accountable.”

Family and Community in Mourning
News of Brown’s death has devastated family, friends, and neighbors. Loved ones described her as a vibrant and caring woman whose life was cut short by senseless violence.
“Jonique had such a big heart,” a grieving relative said. “She didn’t deserve this. Our family just wants justice and peace.”
The Plank Road community, already weary from recurring violence, expressed frustration over yet another shooting. Residents said they fear for their safety and want stronger action to reduce gun-related crime in the city.
Baton Rouge’s Ongoing Gun Violence Struggle
Brown’s death adds to a troubling pattern of shootings in Baton Rouge this year. Law enforcement officials and city leaders have repeatedly acknowledged the challenges of addressing gun crime, particularly in neighborhoods where disputes often escalate into deadly confrontations.
Advocates stress the need for community-based solutions, improved youth programs, and stronger cooperation between residents and law enforcement to prevent more lives from being lost.
A Call for Justice
As the investigation continues, Brown’s loved ones are preparing to honor her memory. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
For now, the Baton Rouge community is left reeling from another tragic loss. Police remain determined to track down those responsible for Brown’s death, but the heartbreak for her family — and the larger message about unchecked violence — lingers deeply.
“This is a tragedy that should never have happened,” the BRPD spokesperson said. “We won’t stop until justice is served.”
