The Crash

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 9, 2025, on Beulah-Cuttino Road. Investigators say Horne was traveling along the roadway when her vehicle veered off course, left the right side of the road, and overturned.

Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker officially identified Horne on Wednesday. He confirmed that an autopsy will be performed at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) as part of the ongoing investigation.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, including potential contributing factors such as speed or road conditions.

Community Mourning

News of Horne’s death has deeply shaken the Sumter community. At just 45 years old, she was remembered by those close to her as a caring, vibrant woman whose life ended far too soon. Tributes have begun to appear on social media, with friends and family expressing their grief and sharing memories.

“This is such a tragic loss,” said one Sumter resident. “She had so much more life ahead of her, and it’s heartbreaking to think she’s gone.”

Broader Concerns

The incident adds to growing concerns over road safety in Sumter County. Local leaders and residents have pointed out that rural roads such as Beulah-Cuttino can be particularly dangerous due to narrower lanes and limited visibility. Safety advocates continue to urge caution for drivers, especially on secondary roads that lack shoulders or barriers.

A Life Remembered

While investigators work to determine the exact cause of Tuesday’s crash, the focus for many remains on remembering Melinda Jene Horne’s life. Funeral arrangements and memorial services are expected to be announced soon, offering the community a chance to come together to honor her memory.

For her family and friends, the loss is immeasurable — a reminder of how suddenly tragedy can strike and how precious life truly is.
