Aspiring Firefighter Fendrick “Fen” Gabaud Dies After Completing New-Hire Assessment With Flagler County Fire Rescue

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. — The Flagler County community is mourning the sudden and tragic death of Fendrick “Fen” Gabaud, 40, who passed away on August 22, 2025, shortly after completing a new-hire assessment to join Flagler County Fire Rescue.

Authorities confirmed that Gabaud had successfully finished his firefighter evaluations and was on the verge of beginning his dream career when his life was cut short.

A Promising Career Cut Short

Gabaud was a recent graduate of Daytona State College’s Firefighter Minimum Standards and EMT program. He had also completed the police academy in 2019, demonstrating a longstanding commitment to public service.

Although he had not yet officially served his first day on the job, officials said he had already shown the dedication, strength, and heart that defined a firefighter.

“Fendrick had everything we look for in a candidate—drive, resilience, and a genuine desire to help people,” one Flagler County Fire Rescue official said. “His passing is not just a loss to his family, but to our entire fire service community.”

Community and Family Roots

Born in Palm Beach County and raised in St. Lucie County, Gabaud excelled as a high school athlete, competing in both football and track and field. He later moved to Volusia County in 2003, where he attended Bethune and became an active member of the community.

Outside of his career pursuits, Gabaud was known for his love of sports and fitness. He was a passionate supporter of the Miami Hurricanes and Baltimore Ravens, often seen cheering his teams with the same enthusiasm he carried into every aspect of life.

But above all, Gabaud was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by his wife, Alicia, his high school sweetheart, and their two children, Aaliyah (10) and Leo (6).

Remembered for His Spirit

Friends, family, and colleagues describe Gabaud as a man with an infectious smile and an unshakable positive outlook. His presence could light up a room, and his loyalty to those he loved never wavered.

“He always put his family first,” a close friend shared. “He lived for Alicia and the kids. Every game, every school event—he was there. That’s the kind of man he was.”

Support for the Gabaud Family

Community members have begun organizing efforts to support Alicia, Aaliyah, and Leo as they cope with the devastating loss. Donations are being encouraged to help with funeral expenses and living costs as the family adjusts to life without their cornerstone.

A Legacy of Service

Though Gabaud’s career as a firefighter never officially began, his commitment to service defined him. His determination, compassion, and final act of generosity—organ donation—ensured that his spirit of giving will continue to impact lives.

For many, Fendrick “Fen” Gabaud will be remembered as more than a firefighter candidate. He was a father, a husband, a friend, and a man whose life represented the values of courage, sacrifice, and love.
