65-Year-Old Paddleboarder Richard Powers Found Dead After Search at Saguaro Lake

MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. — The search for a missing paddleboarder on Saguaro Lake came to a tragic end on Wednesday when authorities confirmed the recovery of 65-year-old Richard Powers, three days after he was last seen.

Disappearance Sparked Widespread Search

According to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), Powers was reported missing Sunday evening after failing to return from a paddleboarding outing on the lake. Deputies launched an extensive search effort that spanned several days and included dive teams, drones, and sonar technology.

Witnesses told investigators they saw Powers paddling alone on Sunday afternoon. When his equipment was later found without him nearby, concerns quickly escalated.

Body Recovered on Wednesday

On Wednesday morning, search teams located a body in the water. Hours later, the coroner’s office positively identified the victim as Richard Powers. MCSO officials said no foul play is suspected and the incident appears to be an accidental drowning.

“This is not the outcome we hoped for,” an MCSO spokesperson said. “Our thoughts are with Mr. Powers’ family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Community and Family Mourning

News of Powers’ death has rippled through the local community. Friends described him as an active, nature-loving man who found joy on the water.

“He was happiest outdoors, and Saguaro Lake was one of his favorite places,” a family friend shared. “We’re heartbroken that his life ended here, but grateful for the memories we have.”

Safety Reminder for Lake Visitors

Saguaro Lake, a popular destination for boating and water sports, has seen previous water-related fatalities. In response, MCSO urged visitors to exercise extra caution on the water.

Officials reminded paddleboarders and kayakers to always wear life vests, avoid going out alone, and be aware of weather and water conditions.

“Even experienced swimmers can be overwhelmed quickly,” deputies warned.

Looking Ahead

As the Powers family begins to process their loss, community members are expected to gather in the coming days to celebrate his life. Authorities continue to emphasize prevention and safety as summer activity on Arizona’s lakes remains high.
