WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A tragic shooting in Winston-Salem has claimed the life of a local resident, with authorities confirming charges against a suspect in what investigators are calling an isolated incident.
According to the Winston-Salem Police Department (WSPD), officers responded to a report of gunfire in the 1200 block of East Twenty-Fifth Street late this week. When officers arrived, they discovered a victim suffering from a gunshot wound. The individual was later identified as Breanna Zhane Hunter.
Emergency medical services were dispatched immediately, but despite efforts to save Hunter, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that family members of the victim have already been notified.
Suspect Identified and Charged
Following an initial investigation, detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) gathered evidence linking a suspect to the shooting. Authorities have since charged Troy Latrece Brown with murder in connection to Hunter’s death.
Police said the case appears to be an isolated incident and stressed that there is no ongoing threat to the broader community. While Brown was taken into custody, officials noted that his arrest photo will not be released at this time.
Community Reaction
The fatal shooting has left residents of the East Twenty-Fifth Street neighborhood shaken. Several neighbors described hearing loud gunshots followed by a heavy police presence. “It’s heartbreaking to see this happen right here in our community,” one resident said. “We just want peace and safety for our families.”
Friends of Hunter have begun expressing their grief on social media, remembering the victim as a loved member of the community whose life was cut short.

Detectives continue to review forensic evidence and interview potential witnesses to build the case. Authorities say additional details will be released as they become available, particularly regarding the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
