FARGO, N.D. — Authorities have identified two men who were fatally shot during a confrontation with Fargo police earlier this week as Nathan Heiberg, 42, of Moorhead, Minnesota, and his brother, Lucas Heiberg, 41, of Grand Forks, North Dakota.
The shooting occurred after officers responded to a disturbance call that escalated into a violent encounter. According to police, three Fargo officers — Michael Anderson, Kyle Seehusen, and Tyler Seehusen — discharged their weapons during the incident. All three officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.
The North Dakota Bureau of Criminal Investigation is now leading the inquiry, reviewing body-worn camera footage, forensic evidence, and eyewitness testimony. Officials have not confirmed whether the Heiberg brothers were armed at the time or what specific actions led to the use of deadly force.
“This is a tragic situation for the Heiberg family and for our officers,” Fargo Police Chief David Zibolski said in a statement. “We are committed to transparency and will cooperate fully with the independent investigation.”
Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots and described a large police presence at the scene. While no officers were seriously injured, the deaths of the two brothers have left the Red River Valley community shaken and searching for answers.
Friends and relatives of the Heibergs are mourning the loss, describing the brothers as family-oriented men whose lives ended suddenly and violently. Community leaders are now calling for the timely release of body camera footage to ensure public trust in the investigation.
The Cass County State’s Attorney’s Office will review the BCI’s findings once the investigation is complete to determine whether the officers’ use of force was legally justified.
Funeral arrangements for Nathan and Lucas Heiberg have not yet been announced.
