BIRMINGHAM, AL — In a major development, authorities have filed capital murder charges against 37-year-old Terrance Akeem Alexander, of Pinson, in connection with the fatal Friday night shooting that left 31-year-old Taevon Jamir Arnold dead in downtown Birmingham.
The tragedy has shaken the city, sparking renewed discussions about public safety in one of Birmingham’s busiest nightlife districts.
The Night of the Shooting
Birmingham Police say officers were called to the 200 block of 20th Street North around 10:45 p.m. Friday after reports of multiple gunshots.
When they arrived, they found Taevon Jamir Arnold suffering from several gunshot wounds. Birmingham Fire and Rescue rushed him to UAB Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead shortly after arrival.
Investigators believe Arnold and Alexander were involved in an altercation before shots were fired. The motive is still under investigation.
Suspect Arrested and Charged
Detectives quickly identified Terrance Akeem Alexander as the suspect and arrested him early Saturday morning in Pinson.
On Monday, the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that Alexander has been formally charged with capital murder. He remains in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.
Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond called the arrest “a step toward justice” and expressed condolences to Arnold’s family.
