COLUMBUS, Ga. — A tragic early-morning shooting unfolded outside an Amazon warehouse in East Columbus on Monday, leaving the suspected gunman dead after taking his own life. Authorities have identified the shooter as 22-year-old Myles Belyue, a former employee of the facility who had recently been terminated.
Shooting Reported Outside Amazon Facility
According to the Columbus Division of Police, officers were dispatched at approximately 4:30 a.m. to the 5800 block of Osceola Court following multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting an active shooter at the Amazon warehouse.
Investigators said Belyue positioned himself outside the building and began firing multiple rounds into the facility while employees were inside. The sound of gunfire created panic among workers, but fortunately, no one inside the building was physically harmed.
Police Response and Tragic Outcome
Responding officers arrived on the scene within minutes, locating Belyue still outside the warehouse at around 4:47 a.m. A tense confrontation quickly followed. However, before police could make an arrest, Belyue reportedly turned the weapon on himself, ending his life at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that no Amazon employees were injured, though several bullets pierced the facility. By mid-morning, reporters observed nearly a dozen bullet holes scattered across the building’s front windows, a chilling reminder of the violence that unfolded in the early hours.
Shooter Identified as Former Employee
Investigators later confirmed that Belyue had been a former employee of the Amazon facility and was recently terminated earlier this month. While the exact motive behind the shooting remains unclear, authorities are considering his employment history as part of their ongoing investigation.
The Columbus Division of Police is working closely with additional law enforcement agencies to piece together the timeline of events and determine what may have led Belyue to target his former workplace.
Community and Workplace Safety Concerns
The incident has raised concerns about workplace security and safety at large distribution facilities, particularly those operating overnight shifts. Employees arriving for the early morning hours were shaken by the heavy police presence and visible damage to the building.
Local residents in East Columbus expressed relief that no bystanders or workers were physically harmed, but many remain troubled by the proximity of the violence to a major employer in the community.
Ongoing Investigation
At this time, investigators have not released further details regarding Belyue’s possible motive. The case remains under active investigation by the Columbus Division of Police. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information about the incident or Belyue’s recent actions to contact investigators.
