MIDVALE, Utah25 — A quiet Midvale neighborhood was thrown into heartbreak Thursday evening after what was first reported as a fatal car crash has now been confirmed as a homicide. The victim, 23-year-old Mason Snowball of West Valley City, lost his life in circumstances that have left family, friends, and the community reeling.
Tragedy Unfolds
According to the Unified Police Department (UPD), emergency dispatchers received a call at 8:18 p.m. Thursday reporting a vehicle that had crashed through a fence and into a front yard near La Salle Drive and Jackson Street.
Responding officers and medical personnel found Snowball critically injured in the vehicle. Despite immediate attempts to save his life, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. Initially treated as a traffic accident, the case took a harrowing turn when investigators discovered an injury inconsistent with a crash.
Sgt. Aymee Race of UPD explained:
“During our investigation, we located an injury to the victim and determined this was no longer just a traffic accident. It became a homicide investigation.”
Further examination revealed that Mason had been shot prior to the crash, prompting a full homicide investigation by UPD’s Violent Crimes Unit with support from other agencies.
Arrest of Juvenile Suspect
On Friday evening, police located and arrested a 14-year-old male suspect, who was booked into the Salt Lake County Juvenile Detention Center. Authorities have not released his identity due to his age. Investigators are still working to determine the circumstances leading to Mason’s death, including any connection between him and the suspect.
Remembering Mason Snowball
Mason’s family has shared their immense grief and a message to the community, reflecting the devastating impact of his sudden death:
“Family and friends, we are deeply saddened to share that our beloved Mason Snowball passed away in a tragic and unexpected accident. Along with the heartbreak of this sudden loss, our family is now facing the unexpected costs of funeral expenses.”
They also highlighted the struggles of Mason’s father, Steve, who has been unable to work in recent years due to a traumatic brain injury from a workplace accident:
“Before his injury, Steve worked as a plumber for decades and was always willing to help friends and neighbors with home projects free of charge. This is an opportunity for the community to return the kindness and generosity he showed to so many over the years.”
Friends, neighbors, and social media followers have expressed shock at the loss, describing Mason as kind, loyal, and full of life, a young man whose absence will be deeply felt.
Community in Mourning
The shooting and crash have left Midvale residents shaken, highlighting concerns about safety, particularly when violent incidents occur unexpectedly in residential areas. While a suspect is now in custody, the tragedy has sparked reflection on the fragility of life and the importance of supporting families affected by sudden loss.
Authorities urge anyone with information about the incident to contact the UPD as the investigation continues. Meanwhile, the community is rallying behind Mason’s family, both emotionally and financially, to help with funeral costs and other immediate needs.
Moving Forward
While law enforcement continues to investigate, the memory of Mason Snowball lives on through the love and stories shared by those who knew him. His life, though tragically short, left a lasting impact on his family, friends, and the Midvale community.
