BROOKLYN, N.Y — A Flatbush community is grappling with shock and grief following the fatal shooting of 24-year-old Ramel Ingram, who was killed outside his home Wednesday night.
According to the New York City Police Department, the incident occurred shortly before 8:45 p.m. on Crooked Avenue, between Saint Paul’s Place and Ocean Avenue, a typically quiet residential block.
The Shooting
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots ring out, followed by cries for help. When officers arrived, they found Ingram with severe gunshot wounds lying near the entrance of his building. First responders attempted life-saving measures before rushing him to Kings County Hospital Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Authorities have not yet released details about a possible suspect or motive. However, investigators are reviewing nearby surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses in hopes of piecing together what led to the deadly encounter.
Community in Shock
The sudden loss has shaken neighbors and friends who described Ingram as a bright young man with his whole future ahead of him.
“He was respectful, hardworking, and loved by so many,” one longtime neighbor said. “This is heartbreaking — to lose someone so young right outside his own home.”
Residents expressed fear and frustration over the violence, noting that the shooting disrupted what has largely been a family-oriented neighborhood. Many left flowers, candles, and photos outside Ingram’s residence, turning the sidewalk into a growing memorial.
Family and Friends Speak Out
Family members are devastated, struggling to come to terms with the tragedy. Relatives described Ingram as a devoted son and loyal friend who had dreams of building a better future for himself and his loved ones.
“He was only 24,” a cousin said. “He should be planning his future, not being buried. We want answers, and we want justice.”
Friends took to social media to share their condolences, remembering Ingram’s sense of humor, kindness, and determination. Many posts carried the same sentiment: gone too soon, but never forgotten.
Ongoing Investigation
The NYPD’s Homicide Division is leading the investigation. While no arrests have been made, authorities confirmed that they are pursuing multiple leads. Detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward, stressing that community cooperation is essential in solving the case.
Officials have asked anyone with knowledge about the shooting to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). Calls can be made anonymously.
Violence in Context
The shooting adds to growing concerns about gun violence in Brooklyn. While city officials have reported progress in reducing overall crime rates, neighborhoods like Flatbush continue to see devastating incidents that tear at the fabric of the community.
Advocates are once again calling for stronger prevention efforts, community outreach, and resources for young people in order to curb the cycle of violence.
Remembering Ramel Ingram
As the investigation continues, family, friends, and neighbors are choosing to remember Ingram for the life he lived rather than the way he died.
“He was loved, he was valued, and he will be missed every single day,” a close friend said at the vigil. “We will fight for justice in his name.”
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
