Tyler Robinson Allegedly Confesses in Online Chat Before Surrendering in Charlie Kirk Killing

UTAH — The 22-year-old suspect accused in the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk reportedly admitted his involvement in the attack during an online conversation, according to sources familiar with the exchange and screenshots obtained by investigators.

Tyler Robinson allegedly posted messages to a group chat on Discord shortly before turning himself in to law enforcement Thursday evening. In one of the messages, Robinson wrote:

“Hey guys, I have bad news for you all. It was me at UVU yesterday. I’m sorry for all of this.”

This message was sent at approximately 7:57 p.m. local time, roughly two hours before officials confirmed that Robinson had voluntarily surrendered to authorities in Utah.

Discord Messages Provide Insight Into Suspect’s Actions

Screenshots reviewed by investigators show the conversation took place in a group chat reportedly including about 30 individuals. According to one member who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity, the chat had been reacting to news of Kirk’s shooting at Utah Valley University (UVU) the previous day.

Messages from other users show the shock and grief expressed by members of the chat. One participant wrote, “Charlie Kirk got shot,” while another added, “I just saw the video, holy s—. Bro didn’t deserve to go out like that, sad.”

Robinson’s account remained silent until the following day, when he issued a message that appeared to acknowledge responsibility and hinted at surrendering:

“I’m surrendering through a sheriff friend in a few moments,” he wrote. “Thanks for all the good times and laughs. You’ve all been so amazing. Thank you all for everything.”

Investigation and Law Enforcement Response

Law enforcement officials have not publicly confirmed the authenticity of the Discord messages, though authorities are reportedly examining Robinson’s online activity as part of the ongoing investigation into Kirk’s death.

The suspect’s surrender followed a day of national attention surrounding the fatal shooting, which took place at UVU. Authorities have been piecing together both physical and digital evidence to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attack.

Community and Online Reactions

The online conversation reportedly shows how social media and digital platforms are becoming integral in modern investigations. Discord, a messaging platform primarily used by younger users for group chats and gaming, provided a rare window into the suspect’s immediate response and potential intent.

Community members, students, and activists have expressed shock and concern following the incident. Many have condemned the violence while calling for accountability and transparency in the investigation.

Next Steps

Robinson remains in custody as authorities continue to investigate the shooting and related events. Law enforcement is expected to release additional information, including potential charges and the timeline of events leading up to the attack.

The fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist, has sparked widespread discussion and concern over campus safety, extremist rhetoric, and the role of online platforms in violent incidents. Investigators continue to urge anyone with information about the case to come forward.
