Chicago authorities are investigating a disturbing and heartbreaking case in Englewood, where 36-year-old Antoinette Congo was found dead after a garage fire early Thursday morning. Firefighters responded to the scene around 12:30 a.m. on September 11, and after extinguishing the blaze, discovered Congoโs unresponsive body inside.
What first appeared to be a tragic fire quickly turned into a criminal investigation. According to officials, Congo had sustained gunshot wounds prior to the fire. Investigators determined that the blaze had been intentionally set using an accelerant, pointing to an effort to destroy evidence and conceal the true nature of the crime.
A witness provided chilling details, reporting that a white work van with a ladder on top was seen near the garage. Several individuals were observed pouring liquid at the base of the structure just before flames erupted, police said. Authorities are now working to identify those involved and to track the suspicious vehicle.
For family and friends, the violent death of Antoinette Congo is almost impossible to comprehend. Loved ones described her as a caring, warm woman whose life was stolen in a cruel and senseless act. โShe didnโt deserve this,โ one relative shared. โWe just want justice for Antoinette.โ
Detectives from the Chicago Police Departmentโs Area One Homicide Unit are leading the investigation, working alongside fire marshals and forensic teams to gather evidence from the scene. No arrests have been announced at this time, but authorities are pursuing multiple leads.
The incident has shaken the Englewood community, which has seen its share of tragedy but is now reeling from the horrifying circumstances of Congoโs death. Neighbors have called for swift justice, while city officials have urged anyone with information to come forward.
โThis was not only a murder, it was an act meant to erase evidence and silence a victim,โ one investigator said. โWe are committed to finding those responsible and holding them accountable.โ
As the investigation continues, Congoโs family is left to mourn a daughter, friend, and loved one taken far too soon. Vigils and tributes are being planned in her honor as the community rallies together to support those grieving and to demand justice.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Chicago Police Department or submit an anonymous tip through CPDโs tip line.
