Columbus Firefighter Jakobe Delquindre Smith Remembered After Tragic Death at 23

Columbus, Georgia — The City of Columbus is mourning the loss of Jakobe Delquindre Smith, a 23-year-old firefighter whose life of courage and service ended far too soon. Jakobe, born October 30, 2001, passed away on September 3, 2025, leaving behind family, friends, colleagues, and an entire community grieving the departure of a young man who devoted himself to protecting others.

A proud graduate of Spencer High School’s Class of 2020, Jakobe continued his education at Albany State University before pursuing his calling as a firefighter with the Columbus Fire Department. Those who served alongside him remember not only his bravery on the job but also the kindness and generosity that defined his character.

“Jakobe was the kind of firefighter you wanted by your side,” one colleague shared. “He was steady, fearless, and always ready to help — whether it was on a call or in daily life.”

Jakobe’s final days revealed a quieter struggle. His last message before passing — the haunting words “has left the chat” — has left loved ones reflecting on the unseen pain he carried. His death, confirmed as suicide, serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of mental health support, even for those we see as protectors and heroes.
