Galveston, Texas — A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded Thursday night when 16-year-old Deshondra Moore was arrested and charged with murder after authorities say she shot and killed her mother, 34-year-old Tiamoya Moore, inside their family home on Avenue Q.
Galveston police said they were called to the 5100 block of Avenue Q at around 7:49 p.m. following frantic 911 calls about a woman being shot multiple times. Officers arrived to find Tiamoya Moore critically wounded. She was rushed by Galveston EMS to the University of Texas Medical Branch emergency room, but despite doctors’ efforts, she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Witnesses told investigators that the suspected shooter was the victim’s daughter, Deshondra Moore. According to police, the teenager fled on foot after the shooting, leaving family and neighbors shocked and devastated.
While investigators were still on the scene, Deshondra returned and was taken into custody without incident. A firearm believed to be the weapon used in the killing was recovered nearby. She is currently being held at the Jerry J. Esmond Juvenile Justice Center on a murder charge.
Authorities have not released a motive and stressed that the investigation is ongoing. Detectives continue to interview witnesses and collect evidence to understand what led to the deadly confrontation.
“This is one of the most tragic situations we face in law enforcement — a family destroyed from within,” a police spokesperson said, adding that resources are being discussed to help those affected, especially given the suspect’s young age.
The Galveston community is left grappling with grief and unanswered questions, mourning the life of Tiamoya Moore while also struggling to comprehend the circumstances that led to her death.
