OREM, Utah — New details are emerging about the suspect accused in the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University, shedding light on the disturbing mindset of the alleged shooter, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson.
Officials investigating the case revealed Friday that Robinson, who was taken into custody near St. George after confessing to his father, had become increasingly political in recent years and had openly expressed hostility toward Kirk.
Growing Dislike for Kirk
According to statements from family members, Robinson’s dislike for Charlie Kirk surfaced most clearly during a family dinner shortly before the attack. At the table, Robinson reportedly brought up Kirk’s scheduled visit to UVU, saying he did not like the conservative figure or his views, which he described as “spreading negativity.”
Investigators now believe these conversations show a clear indication of premeditation in Robinson’s actions.
Disturbing Evidence at the Scene
Beyond Robinson’s words, authorities say the most troubling discoveries came during the forensic examination of bullet casings at the scene of the shooting. Several casings — both fired and unfired — carried engravings investigators described as “bizarre and chilling.”
- One fired casing was etched with a strange internet phrase, suggesting Robinson may have drawn inspiration from online communities.
- Another unfired casing bore the words: “Hey fascist! Catch!” accompanied by crude arrow symbols.
- A third casing carried lyrics from an old Italian protest song historically associated with anti-fascist movements.
- The final casing included what investigators characterized as “an immature and offensive mocking message,” apparently aimed at Kirk himself.
Investigators Seek Motive
While Robinson’s engravings provide unsettling insight into his mindset, officials caution that the investigation into his exact motive remains ongoing. Authorities are now combing through Robinson’s digital history, including social media accounts and possible affiliations with online extremist groups.
“Taken together, these engravings, along with his recent behavior, paint a picture of an individual radicalized by his own anger and disillusionment,” one law enforcement source said.
National Fallout
Charlie Kirk, 31, founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot while addressing students as part of his “American Comeback Tour.” His death has sent shockwaves through political and academic circles nationwide, prompting vigils, condemnations, and calls for heightened security at campus events.
Robinson remains in custody without bond. Federal and state officials have stated additional charges could follow as the investigation develops.
