JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. — Authorities have publicly identified one of the two students injured in Wednesday’s shooting at Evergreen High School, confirming that 18-year-old Matthew Silverstone remains hospitalized as he recovers from his injuries.
Family Releases Statement Through Sheriff’s Office
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office released Silverstone’s name and photograph on Thursday, along with a brief statement from his family.
“The family appreciates the community’s concern and support, but as we remain focused on our loved one’s recovery, we respectfully request privacy as we continue to heal and navigate the road ahead,” the statement read.
The Silverstone family has asked for privacy as their son continues treatment, but expressed gratitude for the outpouring of prayers and encouragement from friends, classmates, and neighbors across the Evergreen community.
Second Student Not Yet Identified
Officials also confirmed that a second Evergreen High School student was hospitalized following the shooting. However, that student’s family has requested their name and photograph not be released at this time.
Both students remain under medical care, though authorities have not disclosed the extent of their injuries.
Community Reeling From School Violence
The shooting, which unfolded on campus Wednesday, has shaken Evergreen High School and the surrounding community. Students, parents, and staff have expressed shock that such violence erupted at the school, which serves hundreds of teenagers in the foothills west of Denver.
“This is every parent’s worst nightmare,” one Evergreen resident said. “We’re heartbroken for these families and praying for the students’ recovery.”
