Ana M. Hernandez, 44, of Wilmington Identified as Victim in Fatal I-95 Crash in Tinicum Township

TINICUM TOWNSHIP, Pa — A late-night tragedy on Interstate 95 has claimed the life of Ana M. Hernandez, 44, of Wilmington, Delaware, after she was struck and killed by a vehicle early Sunday morning in Tinicum Township, state police confirmed.

The Fatal Crash

According to investigators, the crash happened at approximately 2:59 a.m. near mile marker 8.7 on I-95 southbound. Hernandez was walking in the right travel lane of the highway when she was struck by a 2015 Lexus RX3.

The vehicle was driven by Donald Schmidt Jr., 42, of Woodston, New Jersey, who had just merged onto the interstate. In his statement to police, Schmidt said he accelerated to around 65–70 mph and did not immediately realize he had hit a pedestrian. He later stopped at the Royal Farms on Stewart Avenue, where he noticed damage to his vehicle and contacted authorities.

Despite immediate response from emergency personnel, Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:07 a.m.

Weather and Road Conditions

At the time of the crash, police noted that the roadway was wet and slick from rain, factors that may have reduced visibility for both drivers and pedestrians.

Authorities have not confirmed why Hernandez was walking on the highway, and the Pennsylvania State Police – Philadelphia Barracks has launched a full investigation into the incident.

Ongoing Investigation

Police are examining vehicle data, roadway evidence, and potential surveillance video from nearby traffic cameras to piece together the moments leading up to the crash. As of Sunday evening, no charges have been filed, but officials said the investigation remains ongoing.

“We are working diligently to determine the full circumstances of this tragic crash,” a state police spokesperson said. “Our thoughts are with Ms. Hernandez’s family during this incredibly difficult time.”

“Ana had a way of making everyone feel welcome and loved,” one family friend shared. “To lose her so suddenly is devastating — she had so much life ahead of her.”

Social media posts honoring Hernandez have already begun circulating, with many calling for prayers and support for her family as they grieve.

Broader Concerns

The fatal crash highlights the dangers of pedestrian activity on major highways, where vehicles travel at high speeds and drivers often have limited visibility, particularly at night and during poor weather.

Traffic safety advocates are urging both drivers and pedestrians to remain cautious and follow laws designed to prevent tragedies like this.

Moving Forward

Funeral arrangements for Hernandez have not yet been announced. Her family is expected to release a statement in the coming days as they navigate the aftermath of their devastating loss.

Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has additional information to contact the Pennsylvania State Police – Philadelphia Barracks.

“This tragedy is a reminder of how quickly lives can change on our highways,” police said. “We mourn with the Hernandez family as they face this heartbreaking loss.”
