SAN FRANCISCO — At least four people were wounded Tuesday evening in a mass shooting in San Francisco’s India Basin neighborhood, police confirmed.
According to the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), officers were called to the scene shortly after 7 p.m. following multiple 911 reports of gunfire. When officers arrived, they found four victims suffering from gunshot wounds. All were transported to area hospitals, though their conditions have not yet been released.
Chaos in India Basin
The shooting occurred near the waterfront in India Basin, a rapidly developing neighborhood in the city’s southeastern corridor. Witnesses described hearing a series of rapid gunshots followed by screams and people running for safety.
“I heard what sounded like fireworks, but then people started yelling and ducking for cover,” one resident said. “It was terrifying.”
Police Response and Investigation
Authorities immediately established a perimeter around the crime scene. Investigators could be seen collecting shell casings and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and residential buildings.
As of late Tuesday, no arrests had been announced, and police have not released any suspect description. Officials said the motive remains under investigation.
“This incident has shaken our community,” an SFPD spokesperson said. “We are dedicating every available resource to identify the suspect or suspects responsible and to prevent further violence.”
Community on Edge
The shooting has rattled residents in the area, where redevelopment projects have been underway but concerns about violent crime persist. Local businesses temporarily shut down as investigators combed the scene.
Parents in the neighborhood rushed to bring children indoors, while advocacy groups once again renewed calls for stronger gun control measures and expanded community safety programs.
Call for Information
Police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact SFPD’s tip line at (415) 575-4444 or send an anonymous message by texting TIP411 with the keyword “SFPD.”
“This is an active and ongoing investigation,” authorities emphasized. “We will provide updates as soon as new information is available.”
