Tempe Man Kevin Roe, 38, Killed in Suspected DUI Crash; Community Rallies Around Family

TEMPE, Ariz. — A Tempe family and faith community are mourning the heartbreaking loss of 38-year-old Kevin Roe, who died after a suspected drunk driver ran a red light and caused a devastating multi-vehicle crash early Sunday morning.

The Crash at Rural Road and University Drive

According to the Tempe Police Department, the collision occurred at the busy intersection of Rural Road and University Drive when a driver failed to stop at a red light and struck another vehicle at high speed. The force of the impact triggered a chain reaction involving a third vehicle that had a green light, police said.

One of the vehicles was pushed off the roadway and into the Einstein Bros. Bagels storefront nearby, leaving a trail of shattered glass and debris.

Emergency responders transported three people to the hospital. Roe, who was working at the time, sustained critical injuries and was later pronounced dead.

Police confirmed that the driver believed to have caused the crash was arrested for driving under the influence. Charges are pending as the investigation continues.

A Life of Faith, Family, and Service

News of Kevin Roe’s death has left his family, friends, and church devastated. Known affectionately as “Bro. Kevin,” he was remembered as a man whose life revolved around faith, family, and service to others.

He leaves behind his wife, Lola, and their young daughter, Phoebe. To support his family and fund the cruise mission trips he spearheaded, Roe often worked a second job driving for Uber — the job he was working when tragedy struck.

“Kevin loved God, loved people, and loved his family beyond measure,” one friend shared. “He lived with purpose and gave selflessly, always putting others before himself.”

Support for the Roe Family

In the wake of the tragedy, friends and community members have launched efforts to provide immediate support to the Roe family.

  • A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help cover funeral expenses, medical bills, and living costs for Lola and Phoebe.

A Community Grieves Together

The death of Kevin Roe has struck a painful chord throughout Tempe. Friends describe him as a pillar of faith, a devoted husband, and a loving father whose absence will be felt deeply.

“Kevin’s passing leaves a hole in our hearts,” one community member said. “But his legacy of faith, kindness, and service will live on through his family and the lives he impacted.”

Ongoing Investigation

The Tempe Police Department is continuing its investigation into the crash, working alongside prosecutors to determine the full scope of charges against the suspected impaired driver.

Authorities are urging the public to remember the devastating consequences of driving under the influence.

“This was a completely preventable tragedy,” a police spokesperson said. “One family has lost a husband and father, and a community has lost a friend because of one reckless decision.”

Funeral arrangements for Kevin Roe will be announced by the family in the coming days.
