BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Authorities in Brownsville have launched a full investigation after a 40-year-old man was killed in a fatal hit-and-run crash Tuesday afternoon.
The Incident
According to the Brownsville Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 12:23 p.m. to the intersection of International Boulevard and East Polk Street in reference to an auto-pedestrian accident.
When officers arrived, they discovered that a man riding a bicycle had been struck by a vehicle. Despite efforts to save him, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been publicly released, pending notification of family.
Driver Fled the Scene
Investigators confirmed that the driver of the vehicle did not stop to render aid and instead fled the area immediately following the crash. At this time, there is no description available of the suspect vehicle, and police are working to review surveillance footage from nearby businesses and traffic cameras in hopes of identifying the car and its driver.
“This is a tragic incident, and we are asking anyone with information to please come forward,” a police spokesperson said.
Community Shock and Grief
The fatal crash has shaken the Brownsville community, particularly in an area where many residents rely on bicycles for daily transportation. Several community members expressed frustration about reckless driving in the city and called for stronger enforcement of traffic laws to better protect cyclists and pedestrians.
“This could have been anyone’s loved one,” one local resident said. “Drivers need to be more careful, and leaving someone to die on the street is unforgivable.”
Investigation Ongoing
The Brownsville Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Division has taken the lead on the case. Authorities are urging witnesses, or anyone who may have seen the collision or the fleeing vehicle, to contact police immediately.
In addition, police are asking mechanics, body shops, and residents to remain alert for vehicles that may have fresh front-end damage consistent with a bicycle collision.
Call for Justice
As investigators continue their work, the victim’s family and friends are left grieving an unimaginable loss. The department stressed that the driver responsible will be held accountable once identified.
“This was not just a hit-and-run; it was the loss of a human life,” the spokesperson added. “We are committed to bringing justice to the victim and his family.”
