CHICAGO — A woman fatally shot Monday morning in Chicago’s South Loop neighborhood has been identified as 31-year-old Romeca Meeks, while police say the alleged shooter, Holly Johnson, remains in custody as investigators continue to piece together the circumstances of the deadly confrontation.
According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), officers responded at approximately 9:35 a.m. on September 8, 2025, after multiple 911 calls reported gunfire near Cermak Road and State Street.
When officers arrived, they discovered Meeks lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds, including injuries to her chin and thigh. She was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where doctors pronounced her deceased.
Altercation Escalates to Gunfire
Preliminary findings from police indicate that the shooting stemmed from a physical altercation between Meeks and Johnson.
Authorities said Johnson, who allegedly claimed to possess a valid concealed carry license, drew a firearm during the confrontation and shot Meeks several times at close range.
Police confirmed that Johnson remained on the scene, surrendered to responding officers, and had her weapon recovered. She was taken into custody without further incident.
Witness Accounts Complicate the Case
Witnesses told investigators that the situation became even more volatile when Carlos “Losos” Way, the father of Meeks’ child, appeared during the dispute.
According to those accounts, Way—who is reportedly under an active restraining order—placed Meeks in a headlock moments before the shooting. In that tense instant, witnesses say Johnson fired the shots that fatally struck Meeks.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the accuracy of these witness statements, but they are considered a significant part of the ongoing investigation.
A Mother’s Life Cut Short
Family members shared that Meeks had just dropped her young son off at school and was on her way to work when she encountered Johnson. Loved ones described Meeks as a devoted mother, hardworking, and deeply protective of her child.
“She was just trying to live her life and raise her son,” one relative said. “This is beyond devastating for all of us.”
Her family is now left grappling with the sudden loss, while also facing the difficult task of explaining the tragedy to her young child.
Community Pleads for Privacy
In the aftermath of the shooting, disturbing videos of the incident have circulated across social media platforms. Meeks’ family has pleaded with the public to stop sharing such content, calling it disrespectful and deeply painful.
Her sister issued a heartfelt request:
“Please, for the sake of my sister’s memory and her child, do not share those videos. We are grieving and need respect in this moment.”
Investigation Underway
The Chicago Police Department confirmed that Area Three Detectives are leading the investigation. Officials have not yet provided details regarding what sparked the initial confrontation between Meeks and Johnson.
Charges against Johnson are expected to be announced as the case develops.

A City Reckons With Violence
The fatal shooting adds to a troubling wave of violence in Chicago, particularly incidents tied to domestic disputes and the growing presence of legally carried firearms. Community leaders say the case underscores the urgent need for prevention measures and stronger protections for victims of domestic violence.
For now, the South Loop neighborhood is left in shock as Meeks’ family mourns the devastating loss of a young mother whose life ended far too soon.
