GUILFORD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — The Medina County community is mourning the loss of 18-year-old Gavynn Patterson, who was killed early Thursday morning when his motorcycle struck a cow standing in the roadway on River Styx Road.
The Medina County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies were dispatched at approximately 3:05 a.m. to the 8200 block of River Styx Road after a passerby noticed a motorcycle lying in the roadway. When first responders arrived, they discovered a severe crash involving a 1983 Honda motorcycle and a cow that had been standing in the road.
The motorcycle was being operated by 18-year-old Gavynn Patterson, who was traveling northbound at the time of the collision. Authorities confirmed that Patterson was pronounced dead at the scene. The cow also died as a result of the impact.
Investigators say drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be factors in the crash. The Medina County Sheriff’s Office, working in coordination with the Medina County Coroner’s Office, continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the tragic collision.
The Seville-Guilford Fire Department and the Montville Township Police Department also responded and provided assistance at the scene.
River Styx Road, known for its rural surroundings and limited lighting, can be particularly hazardous in the early morning hours when visibility is low. Local residents say livestock sometimes wander onto nearby roadways, creating dangerous conditions for drivers.
News of Patterson’s sudden death has shaken the Medina County community, particularly given his young age. Friends and neighbors described him as a bright young man with his whole future ahead of him.
Authorities are reminding motorists to remain cautious when driving on rural roads, especially at night and during early morning hours when visibility is reduced and unexpected obstacles may be present.
The Medina County Sheriff’s Office said more information will be released as the investigation continues.
