TULSA, Okla. — What began as an ordinary late afternoon drive turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy Wednesday after a motorcycle crash at the intersection of 71st Street and Canton Avenue claimed the life of 23-year-old Ashton Meyer.
According to Tulsa Police, the deadly collision unfolded around 4:50 p.m. Witnesses described Meyer weaving through heavy traffic at high speeds and performing dangerous stunts, including wheelies, in the moments leading up to the crash.
Authorities say a vehicle attempting a turn crossed into Meyer’s path. In an effort to avoid a direct collision, the young motorcyclist laid his bike on its side, a last-second maneuver often used to reduce impact. But despite his efforts, the motorcycle skidded uncontrollably and slammed into the turning car.
The violent crash ruptured the motorcycle’s fuel tank, sparking flames that quickly spread across the twisted wreckage. Meyer was thrown from his bike and became trapped beneath another vehicle in the intersection, pinned as fire spread dangerously close.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, working swiftly to extinguish the flames and free Meyer from under the car. He was transported to a nearby hospital with critical injuries. Despite doctors’ best efforts, Meyer was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
The drivers of the other vehicles involved remained at the scene and cooperated fully with investigators. Authorities confirmed that neither sustained serious injuries, and at this time, no charges are expected against them.
Police emphasized that the crash serves as a grim reminder of the dangers of reckless riding. “High speeds and stunt driving not only put the rider at risk but also endanger everyone else on the roadway,” one officer at the scene stated.
As news of Meyer’s death spread, tributes poured in from friends and family members on social media, many remembering him as adventurous and full of energy, though some noted the tragic consequences of his risk-taking nature.
This fatal crash marks yet another deadly incident at the busy 71st and Canton intersection, where residents say heavy traffic, fast-moving vehicles, and sudden turns often create hazardous conditions.
For now, Meyer’s family and loved ones are left to grapple with the sudden, devastating loss of a young man whose life ended far too soon.
