15-Year-Old Shot by Hannibal Police After Confrontation with Knife in Hardee’s Parking Lot

HANNIBAL, Mo. — A confrontation between a teenager and Hannibal police officers ended in gunfire Friday evening, leaving a 15-year-old male critically injured in the parking lot of a Hardee’s restaurant.

According to the Hannibal Police Department, officers were dispatched after reports of a domestic dispute nearby involving the teen. Witnesses told investigators the boy fled the scene on foot and was later spotted running along the highway before entering the fast-food restaurant’s parking lot.

Confrontation with Police

When officers attempted to approach him, the teenager allegedly brandished a knife and threatened them. Eyewitnesses reported that officers repeatedly gave verbal commands, urging the boy to drop the weapon. Instead, the teen reportedly told officers to “go ahead and shoot” while continuing to make threatening movements.

Police say the situation escalated when the boy advanced on the officers with the knife in hand. At that point, multiple shots were fired, striking the teen several times.

Emergency Response

The 15-year-old collapsed in the parking lot as officers quickly applied tourniquets to stem heavy bleeding. Despite his injuries, officials confirmed he was still breathing at the scene. Paramedics with the Hannibal Fire Department and local EMS personnel responded within minutes, providing urgent care before transporting him by ambulance to Hannibal Regional Hospital (HRH).

Authorities said both Lifeflight and Air-Evac were requested for rapid transport to University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri, but both had to decline due to poor weather conditions.

Condition and Investigation

The teen remains in serious condition, and his current status has not been released. Police have not yet disclosed how many shots were fired or how many officers discharged their weapons.

The area around the Hardee’s was secured for several hours as investigators documented the scene and interviewed witnesses. The incident will remain under investigation, and body camera footage is expected to be reviewed as part of the standard protocol in officer-involved shootings.

Community Reaction

The shooting has already sparked concern within the Hannibal community, with residents questioning both the circumstances leading up to the confrontation and the broader issues surrounding youth, mental health, and law enforcement response.

“This is heartbreaking on every level,” one bystander said. “He was only 15 years old. I just hope he pulls through.”

Officials have emphasized that more information will be released once the investigation is complete. For now, the case has been referred to independent authorities for review to ensure transparency and accountability.
